George Oates’ work calls into question the absurdity of authority within conventions and institutions. Oates’ irreverent painting practice across hessian, canvas, wood and paper explores the contradictions inherent in our existence. At once tragic and comic, calculated and intuitive, masterful and crude, it rejects the notion of a single, palatable definition.
